Hoop & Flow Movement 101

Hooper from Portland, Maine. Started performing hoop dance in clubs and at festivals on stages in 2016. In 2017 she took on the roll of directing groups of flow artists at large scale events such as Germination and The Psychedelic Sleepover. Since doing so, she has picked up many other props including, poi, fans, palm torches and mini double staves. She has also lead hoop dance workshops across the country.
Her goal is to light up the stage with not only the fire or LED lights but her bright smile. She hopes to connect with her crowd and feel the energy all around. Whether you need a singular act or something larger, Sunrise Stormhooper will be sure to bring the heat.

Alexander has been hooping for 14 years, devoting the last few primarily to trailblazing new double hooping ground, developing a systematic hooping pedagogy, and illustrating/writing “The Book On Hooping,” which is currently available. Nixon’s Hoop Journey started in 2004 playing Puck in a Burning Man-inspired version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which he hula hooped his way into and out of mischief. Nixon has been hooping ever since, helping Stefan Spins and Malcolm Stuart teach the legendary Groovehoops class in NYC, and, thereafter, taking his hoops with him to his Peace Corps service in Guatemala. Nixon teaches group and private classes online and in NYC, and hosts a daily Hoop Jam in New York City’s Union Square, wherein he loves to show off his innovative work in Double Hooping using his new LED hoops designed by TheHoopCompany. Last but not least, Nixon is working to raise interest in making hooping a stand-alone Olympic sport for men and women and hopes you will become involved. Nixon is also the singer/song-writer, front man of The Violets, an 80s styled rock band. He graduated from Stanford University in 2000 with Honors in Latin American Studies and Fine Arts.

Finding your flow in life, dance and performance…

Flow Arts

Flow Arts

A typical workshop will focus on the basics of Contact Staff, Double Staff and/or Hoops. Each of these disciplines has been used in martial arts, Cirque du Soleil, marching bands and many other types of performances. No prior training? No problem! Grasping these concepts will be quick and easy. For staff, we will practice grip, rotors, flow planes, one-beats, two-beats, body rolls, and anti-spins. For double staff, we will review grip, finger rolls, timing and direction, one-beats, extensions, and reels. For hoops, we will learn waist hooping, isolations, anti-spins, and jump throughs. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Maurice (Reese) Crawley has been practicing flow arts since January 2014. The passion and freedom found in the arts has taken him through many different forms of self-expression, but his love is for performance. From volunteering at the American Youth Circus Organization (AYCO) in Portland, Maine, to video shoots in Birmingham, AL, to fire performances for 80,000 attendees at Burning Man, every endeavor receives all of his time and dedication. Most recent achievements include SpinCo’s Social Engagement Chair, Bangarang shows, PEX performances, and festivals all around the country. Reese looks forward to bringing that same energy to you.
